Ray was goalkeeper for the team of Port Vale that won the Third Division (North) title in 1953/4, conceding only 21 goals. In a total of 46 games Ray kept 30 clean sheets, which remains to this very day not only a Port Vale record, but also a football league record. Ray's fascinating thoughts on both his sporting career (he was not only a footballer!) and on the subject of sport itself, plus his opinions on the other sportsmen he's encountered over the years make terrific reading. But there are also a variety of entertaining personal reminiscences in this book which spans 70 years of travel, family life, community participation and sporting career.
