Healing body and mind : a critical issue for health care reform

Roger Kathol and Suzanne Gatteau ; foreword by Mary Jane England

It doesn't make sense to treat Dan's bleeding ulcer, without attention to the depression that spurs him to drink alcohol excessively each night, which is what created the bleeding ulcer. Neither is it best to give Mary medication for hypertension without treating her mental state, as she is a classic Type A personality and that helps fuel her hypertension. The connections seem obvious - to get and stay healthy we need to treat mind and body. But today the treatments are separated in medical settings and across health plans. Kathol, a veteran internist and psychiatrist, shows us the physical, emotional, social, economic, and legal effects of what he calls "headless health care." He illustrates with patient stories the profound impact psychological and behavioral disorders have on physical health and, conversely, the impact that medical illness has on mental health.
