This is the only edition of Madame Bovary available that includes the complete manuscripts from Flaubert's 1857 trial. This edition includes a substantial number of new explanatory annotations. Included are sixteen critical studies on the novel's central themes, twelve of them new to this edition, including essays by Baudelaire. A chronology and selected bibliography are also included.
