The novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald

John B. Chambers

John Chambers' book is a critical reappraisal of Fitzgerald's novels which rejects the view that he was an emotional rather than a conceptual thinker. Detailed analyses of his early fiction are used to point to the presence of a controlling philosophical concern, best described in his own phrase as "the wise and tragic sense of life". Chambers examines "The Great Gatsby", "This Side of Paradise", "The Beautiful and the Damned" and other works from this perspective and argues that they have a coherence and substance which has hitherto been unnoticed.
